Mice dance

This is a short night story.

Late in the night, I am the only one waiting for the train to arrive and I enter the empty underground platform. Some small dots are moving far away on the glossy floor and then hide themselves inside some tight, thin lines inside the walls. How do they even fit inside these lines? I am wondering. Then a low, but penetrative sound. These small moving dots do also make some sound, they actually have a voice. Whenever I approach them they disappear. Thus, I have to adapt my movement in a way that I can get closer to them. My steps now become smoother and more slow. I manage to get closer to the dancing dots and then I realise that these small balls are mice. Tiny, little, baby mice. Whispering the song of the anticipating train and the song of the rubbish bins, the song of the tight lines they hide in.

I start to talk to them, asking when the train will come and saying to them that I wouldn’t like to walk this night, because it’s cold outside. They won’t give any response, but instead they continue moving around the floor, attacking the plastic rubbish bin bags, dancing on the train rails and then back inside the wall lines.

How much time passed, I don’t know anymore. But I could feel the floor shaking, so I realised that this was the time for me to move on. I could see the red lights of the train and could feel the force of the wind.

This was the moment, in which all the dots disappeared and I was alone again.

  3. Underground stations are amazing places. I live and work in London where tube trains proliferate. I have heard mice scampering and the underground river run close to the underground station. Kevin
